Located approximately 160 km from Hanoi, the Pu Luong Nature Reserve is home to communities of Thai and Muong ethnic groups. In the Thai language, "Pu Luong" means the highest peak of the village. HOW TO GET TO PU LUONG

This natural reserve area is located in Ba Thuoc and Quan Hoa districts, Thanh Hoa province. Pu Luong is about a 4-hour drive from Hanoi. To the north and northeast of Pu Luong are the districts of Mai Chau, Tan Lac, and Lac Son in Hoa Binh province. Visitors can reach Pu Luong by motorbike, self-driving car, or bus.


From Hanoi, take National Highway 6 through Mai Chau, Hoa Binh, then follow National Highway 15C to Co Luong, Dong Dieng to reach Pu Luong, or take the Ho Chi Minh road through Cuc Phuong, then Cam Thuy and head towards the Na Meo international border. If coming from Thanh Hoa City, travelers can also take the Ho Chi Minh trail.


Currently, many accommodation options offer packages including round-trip transportation from Hanoi to Pu Luong and rooms ranging from 1,000,000 VND per person per night. Additionally, group travelers can rent private cars or take a shuttle bus for around 400,000 VND per person round trip, with higher-quality vehicles costing around 500,000 VND.


Upon arriving at Pu Luong, visitors can explore the attractions and villages by motorbike, bicycle, or trekking. Many accommodations provide these services along with guides.

ACTIVITIES

 

Located on the route from Mai Chau to Pu Luong, Son Ba Muoi consists of three highland villages in Lung Cao commune, Ba Thuoc district, with a mild climate and temperatures ranging from 18 to 22 degrees Celsius. This area remains relatively isolated, preserving many traditional customs of the ancient Thai people, with traditional stilt houses bearing many local characteristics. Travelers stopping at Son Ba Muoi can enjoy a peaceful life amidst the majestic natural scenery.
Deeper into the core area of Pu Luong Nature Reserve, Hieu village is famous for its Hieu waterfall with strong, clear water flowing in multiple layers, attracting visitors for refreshing dips. At the foot of the waterfall are natural "swimming pools" with clear, cool water in the summer and warm water in the winter. Apart from waterfall swimming, visitors can also explore palm hills, terraced fields, and pristine forests.


About 11km from Hieu Waterfall is the Crab Village or Cham Stream area, where massive water flows await exploration by bamboo rafts. The rafting tour lasts for an hour, with each raft accommodating 8-14 people, priced at 50,000 VND per person.

Additionally, visitors shouldn't miss hiking through terraced fields, cycling, bamboo rafting on the river, or simply relaxing, reading books, and breathing in the fresh air.

Pu Luong Peak stands at around 1,700 meters, being one of the favorite trekking destinations for enthusiasts due to its steep and winding paths with many challenges. It takes about 6 hours under favorable weather conditions to reach the summit of Pu Luong. Standing atop Pu Luong Peak, visitors can fully appreciate the picturesque scenery of the forests, fields, and valleys below.


Travelers can camp on the summit for overnight stays or bring lunch and return to stay overnight in Don village. When hiking, wear long clothes, hats, hiking boots, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, drinking water, snacks, etc. If lacking experience in mountain climbing, accommodations also offer day trips or 2-day-1-night tours.

Don village is home to a large population of Thai people. In recent years, domestic and international tourists have increasingly visited Don village, attracted by its tranquil space, pristine natural landscapes, and various local specialties such as forest bamboo shoots, ducks, wild pigs, hill chickens, squash, bitter melons, wild vegetable soup, bamboo-cooked rice, banana flower salad, etc.


Kho Muong village and Bat Cave are the most attractive destinations in Pu Luong that visitors should not miss. The road to Kho Muong is challenging due to steep slopes along the cliffs and deep valleys, but upon arrival, everyone will be amazed by its hidden beauty. Walking from the beginning of the village through large rice fields to near the end of the trail leads to Bat Cave or Kho Muong Cave. These limestone caves, formed about 250 million years ago, have become homes for many bat species. As you venture deeper into the cave, you'll encounter a large cavern covered by strange limestone formations.


The Pho Don market takes place every Thursday and Sunday. Here, you can not only experience a highland market but also buy souvenirs, local products, and enjoy specialty foods. The special thing about this market is that it still operates by exchanging goods of equal value, with few instances of bargaining.
